As Marvel moved into the new millennium, the company made another - far more successful - attempt at revamping their core characters for a new generation. With Ultimates mainstay writers Brian Michael Bendis and 2000AD's Mark Millar, these re-energised versions of the Marvel characters have broken sales records over the last five years. Spurred, perhaps, by the success of Marvel's Ultimates series, DC engaged Jim Lee to give Batman and Superman a new lick of paint, with great commercial success.

From these beginnings, Marvel has applied the Ultimates formula to The Avengers, SHIELD and Fantastic Four.
  Ultimate X-Men 1 (2001)

With many artists working on the Ultimates series, it has been left largely to writers Bendis and Millar to hold the project together with a common vision.
  Batman 608 (2003)

Both the revised titles have broken sales records during their run. (Hover your cursor over the cover above to see Lee's first Superman cover).
